Questionnaires reveal that 90% of Multiple Sclerosis patients have Osteopenia/Osteoporosis. The substantial strength gains made with the type of exercise provided by IsoTechnology’s IsoPUMP indicate that the associated chemoreflex activity could potentially improve bone density.
Preliminary measurements of interstitial and intercellular change and blood flow during IsoPUMP maximal exercise indicate significant major fluid shifts between the major body cavities and in particular the pelvis. Advances in fluid measurement may make it possible to include the head in this type of monitoring. This would have substantial impact on our understanding of blood flow and associated cellular changes during exercise and during trauma such as injury or stroke.
Many MS patients tend to lose muscle strength in a similar fashion to astronauts in prolonged zero gravity. MS subjects may thus serve as a model for prolonged space flight. Any device utilized to provide pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight rehabilitation and reconditioning would of necessity have to be gravity independent. Such a device is the IsoPUMP.
