There are many different activities that require a heavy load to be carried over a distance, ranging from recreational to occupational- this is especially true for our military personnel. The Human Performance & Biomechanics Lab study employs the most common backpack type, which requires carrying the load high on the torso with the majority of the weight centered on the thoracic region of the spine.
